Ecological RichnessPalawan is considered to be a biodiversity corridor in that apart from it being the largest province in the Philippines and it being the refuge to hundreds of marine and terrestrial threatened species, it also has retained about 50% of its original forest cover including vast old growth forests. The importance in preserving such biodiversity is manifested through the passage of laws that aims to protect the environmental richness of the province. The Philippine Congress passed the Republic Act 7611, known as the Strategic Environmental Plan (SEP) for Palawan Act, which serves as the framework for the biodiversity and ecological preservation of the area and encompasses the terrestrial and forestlands, the marine or coastal area, and the tribal ancestral lands.
Moreover, the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organizations (UNESCO) declared Palawan to be a “Man and Biosphere Preserve” for its ecological richness. Further, the province has two World Heritage Sites: the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River and the Tubbataha Reef. |
